Tie Dye Fun

This past weekend I had my first attempt at Tie Dying. It was a lot of fun and a good learning experience. I used a Jacquard kit which I had read some wonderful reviews about. Rather than using the old color bath method, the 'new' method is fairly easy and somewhat cleaner. Of course, it can only be cleaner if you actually wear the gloves that were provided, which I didn't for some silly reason. First you soak the clothing in a tub of water and soda ash for about 20 minutes. Then you tie and rubber band the shirt in a variety of patterns. The kit came with some diagrams, but I found it more useful to watch a few videos on Youtube. The actual color dyes are mixed with water in a squirt bottle, and you then use the squirt bottle to add color to the tied cloth bundle in any pattern you desire. You can see some of the great results below, and I definitely learned a few things for next time. For example: buy the colors you really want. The pictures on the kit box had colors that were not in the kit, primarily black. Also, since I have boys I think more blue would be called for as well. Big Tip: Wear the gloves provided. Yeah, it's not harmful but gosh it's annoying when you still have dark purple stains on your finger almost a week later!
