Spring Into Creativity - 3/3/13 Shirt Painting

Shirt Painting!

A fun and creative project that ends up with wearable art! Can be done supervised with children, thought they're going to really only enjoy the painting portion. For our craft we wanted to create our own stencil images, so after the boys picked their images I handled the cutting of the stencils.

For the Stencils, you'll need Freezer Paper and an Iron. Once you print or draw your image on a regular piece of paper you will take the Freezer Paper (slick side down) and tape it to the image. Carefully you'll use the knife to cut all the portions that will be painted. If there are multiple colors you will need to create multiple stencils for the same image. Once the image is cut out, you will take it off the image paper and make sure all the tape comes off as well. Then you will place the Freezer Paper (slick side down again) onto the shirt, and iron it in place. I put a piece of cardboard in the shirt between the layers, so that it doesn't attach or paint through to the back side of the fabric. Once the Freezer Paper is firmly stuck on the shirt you can now paint without fear of the paint bleeding under the stencil!! Once done painting, I typically wait overnight for the paint to dry and then gently remove the Freezer Paper from the shirt. It comes off very cleanly and I've been very happy with clean lines. Though, I will mention that insides of letters are the hardest to iron on and keep from bleeding under.
