Spring Into Creativity ~ 3/17/13 Shrinky Dink Suncatchers!

Shrinky Dink Suncatchers

Don't you remember having a great time making Shrinky Dinks as a kid? There is a great way to make your own Shrinky Dinks at home! Collect any plastic #6 that you can find (it's a tad hard to find too, I finally found that the cheese slice container lids from Fresh & Easy are plastic #6 and if I find another good source I will post it. If you find a great source as well, please share with us!) Color the plastic with Permanent Markers and be sure to punch a hole so you can attach them to a string. Then place them on a cookie sheet (on parchment paper) in the oven at 350 degrees, for 2-3 minutes. The plastic will curl up then flatten out again, this means they are done shrinking. I had some issues with the plastic curling up and sticking to itself and the best suggestion, I've seen so far, to prevent this is to place another smaller cookie sheet on top of the  Shrinky Dinks to keep them from rolling (also, you put them in at 300 degrees for about 20 minutes instead.) I will definitely be trying this method next time! I just used some twine and placed them along our window blinds. This first batch did not turn out the greatest due to them sticking together, but I definitely plan on trying this craft again soon with my kids.
