Spring Into Creativity ~ 3/10/13 Clay Creatures

Clay Creatures

This is a great idea with children! I made my own modeling clay using the following recipe: 4 cups all purpose flour, 1 cup salt and 1 1/2 cups water. Mix it really well until it is about the consistency of play-doh.

Form the clay into any creation you can think of! For this project I was trying to encourage my kids to make a creature, animal or statue of some sort.

I created a panda! Here is the panda before being put in the oven. I used a butter knife to create some eyes and small details.

Clay Creatures after being in oven

After forming the clay, you will put the oven to 250 degrees, and place the creations in to start with for about 20-25  minutes. Then check it every 5 minutes until hard. For our project the smaller objects took about 30-35 minutes, whereas the bigger  object took closer 50-60 minutes.

We then allowed the clay to dry for about an hour before painting them with acrylic paints.

Here is my finished panda with his bamboo stick! My younger son was inspired to make a snowman (in March) and he created a small snake companion for him. My older son made a Death Star and using an old butter knife blade made sword.
